A trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo (25 November 2017)

Zoos Victoria had announced that the four lion cubs, two males and two females, who were born to second-time mum Nilo at Werribee Open Range Zoo on August 12, had now been named and would be on limited display as they still needed long rest periods like all young cubs (and kids). Having been advised that the best viewing times to see Asali, Ilola, Ato and Lwazi were before 10.30am, we headed down to Werribee early and arrived even before the gates opened thanks to some lighter than usual traffic.

Once the gates opened and our membership cards had been scanned, we made our way towards the lion enclosure in the hope of securing a good viewing spot. When we arrived, the keepers were still cleaning the interior glass and setting up food and enrichment for the lions, but we could hear the male lion roaring, clearly impatient for his breakfast. Watching the keepers placing these huge rib bones out for the lions gave us the opportunity to determine the probable best positions for good photos and to set up a third camera to record a bit of video while the magpies tried to steal a bit of meat off the waiting bones.

By the time things were all set, there were only about six of us at the enclosure and we were not disappointed when the pride came out of their night dens.

The big male lion immediately claimed a huge rack of ribs and headed off to the shade to eat.

A trip to Healesville Sanctuary (11 November 2017)

We headed out early to try and arrive at Healesville Sanctuary as close to opening time as possible. Early morning at Healesville is always a special time, the bush is positively alive with the sounds of animals and there are very few human voices/sounds to disturb them. As an added bonus, we often find that we meet one of the keepers returning an animal to its enclosure after their morning enrichment, like when taking a dingo or a wombat for a walk. This morning was extra special though.

A trip to Melbourne Aquarium (29 September 2017)

It had been a few years since either of us had visited the Melbourne Aquarium, so Chloe and Alex bought us tickets as a special surprise gift.

Photography in the Melbourne Aquarium is a difficult challenge to say the least. Most of the site is dark with enclosure walls that are made of thick (10cm or more) curved perspex with lighting internal to the enclosures and then there is the water itself. These two medium refract or bend the light substantially making a clean focus difficult to achieve. In addition, many of the walls are scratched either internally or externally, resulting in distracting lines across any photo. Despite these challenges, we did manage some reasonable photos.

The clown fish looked great

And the lighting behind the jellyfish made them seem almost alien

Interestingly, Melbourne Aquarium also has a few reptiles on display

Over all a really great experience and a great day out.

A trip to Melbourne Zoo (15 September 2017)

One of the best things about being a Zoos Victoria member is the fact that you can go in anytime without needing to buy a ticket for yourself. On this occasion we invited our good friend Chloe and her partner Alex to join us as both of them hadn’t been to any of the zoos in years. Unfortunately Alex had to be at work, but Chloe was able to make it. As an added bonus, we lent Chloe our Nikon D3200 to play with so she could experience the joy of photography with a real camera instead of using her phone.

Our first stop was to visit the lemurs as Chloe hadn’t seen the new Lemur Island. The lemurs, however, were still stirring from their slumber.

Breakfast with Joel Satore at Melbourne Zoo (31 August 2017)

As part of the PhotoArk exhibition at Melbourne Zoo, members were invited to a "Breakfast with Joel Satore", the photographer behind the PhotoArk project. This exciting opportunity to meet the man behind the project was certainly something not something to pass up, even if it meant a very early morning start.

Arriving at Melbourne Zoo before 7am and meeting up with other members was a special experience. Jay Town from the Herald-Sun newspaper and our instructor at the Nikon School events was there too and we got to have a brief chat as we walked in.
