We once again headed into Melbourne Zoo to take advantage of the early opening times and hopefully catch sight of Miska, the beautiful snow leopard, like we did on our last visit. Arriving shortly before the gates opened at 8am, we queued with other eager visitors. Once the gates opened we headed directly for the Carnivore’s Trail, passing by the empty Lion enclosure (the boys were still in their beds) we found that there were some necessary works going on and Carnivore’s Trail was closed until 9am, so we checked in on Isabella, the Philippines Crocodile.
A trip to Healesville Sanctuary (11 November 2017)
We headed out early to try and arrive at Healesville Sanctuary as close to opening time as possible. Early morning at Healesville is always a special time, the bush is positively alive with the sounds of animals and there are very few human voices/sounds to disturb them. As an added bonus, we often find that we meet one of the keepers returning an animal to its enclosure after their morning enrichment, like when taking a dingo or a wombat for a walk. This morning was extra special though.

A trip to Melbourne Zoo (15 September 2017)
One of the best things about being a Zoos Victoria member is the fact that you can go in anytime without needing to buy a ticket for yourself. On this occasion we invited our good friend Chloe and her partner Alex to join us as both of them hadn’t been to any of the zoos in years. Unfortunately Alex had to be at work, but Chloe was able to make it. As an added bonus, we lent Chloe our Nikon D3200 to play with so she could experience the joy of photography with a real camera instead of using her phone.
Our first stop was to visit the lemurs as Chloe hadn’t seen the new Lemur Island. The lemurs, however, were still stirring from their slumber.

A trip to Melbourne Zoo (24 August 2017)
Once again we headed into Melbourne Zoo to be part of the Nikon School and get some more great advice. Naturally, we arrived early so we could wander about and take a few shots prior to the class.
We started by visiting the pygmy hippopotamus:
And the canopy walk, where we found various grooming sessions going on:
A trip to Werribee Zoo (20 August 2017)
Having completed the Nikon School at Melbourne Zoo the previous day, we were itching to try out some of the advice at a different location. We took the drive to Werribee and arrived by mid-morning (even after initially missing the freeway turn-off). Werribee’s massive layout provides plenty of places for the animals to wander, which can also then provide a challenge in just finding some of the animals. Some animals, however, make themselves very obvious, like this bird that calmly walked across the pathway in front of us:
We also got really lucky with one of the gorillas happily sitting and posing in almost perfect light, in an almost perfect position for photography:
