Breakfast with Joel Satore at Melbourne Zoo (31 August 2017)

As part of the PhotoArk exhibition at Melbourne Zoo, members were invited to a "Breakfast with Joel Satore", the photographer behind the PhotoArk project. This exciting opportunity to meet the man behind the project was certainly something not something to pass up, even if it meant a very early morning start.

Arriving at Melbourne Zoo before 7am and meeting up with other members was a special experience. Jay Town from the Herald-Sun newspaper and our instructor at the Nikon School events was there too and we got to have a brief chat as we walked in.

Nikon School at Melbourne Zoo (19 and 24 August 2017)

Nikon in partnership with Melbourne Zoo and as part of the Photo Ark exhibition, provided the opportunity to get some expert advice on wildlife photography from award winning photographer Jay Town and the chance to play with some of their cool gear. Naturally, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try out some different gear and to get some expert advice on how to make more from our current gear. We loved the idea so much that we signed up to do the course twice and both times got great advice and really learnt something, so this post covers both sessions.

The course started with a brief presentation from Jay.

A trip to Melbourne Zoo (19 August 2017)

Once again we took a trip into Melbourne Zoo to visit our favourite animals and give the cameras a good workout. Winter was still keeping Melbourne temperatures low, but after a hot coffee, the shutter fingers were ready to go. As per usual, we started with those three cheeky male lions. We arrived to see the keepers setting up a tyre and other activities for them to play with. Once the keepers were safely out of the enclosure, the three boys came running out and immediately started playing with the toys that had been left out for them, even if they were yawning still:

An impromptu trip to Melbourne Zoo (14 July 2017)

Another cold winter’s morning and the last weekday of the school holidays made for a perfect time to make an unplanned trip to Melbourne Zoo and catch the PhotoArk exhibition.

Naturally our first stop was to drop in on those three cheeky male lions. We found them playing with a stick and rolling around like they were puppy dogs, not big cats.
